Netflix competition coming in 2012
Netflix loomed so large over digital distribution this year that its shadow may have obscured the emergence of a more diversified ecosystem feeding off of Hollywood content. It was hard to escape the Los Gatos, Calif.-based streaming service in 2011, from the stratospheric growth of its subscriber base and stock price to a series of ill-advised strategic decisions that triggered the plunge of its market capitalization as well as acquisition rumors. Even Hollywood got caught up in the drama, moving from the cold shoulder Time Warner topper Jeff Bewkes first gave the new competish to a warm embrace many congloms offered Netflix for ordering its first original series and signing a plethora of licensing pacts that rained revenue like manna to their bottom lines. But there's many more digital players that will command the attention of studios and consumers in 2012, from would-be Netflix rivals to those sporting entirely different business models and aiming to deliver TV programs and movies to every screen in U.S. homes. The 22 million subs Netflix brings in validated its approach as it collects monthly fees in exchange for which customers can get all the programming they can stream or snag by snail mail. But CEO Reed Hastings' success created an entirely new category, known as subscription VOD, that spawned imitators with the potential to steal away market share. Hulu, for one, built an SVOD component, Hulu Plus, off its massive ad-supported base that has nabbed 1 million subs in over a year. Like Netflix, Hulu began commissioning original content and locking up exclusives on catalog fare, though it didn't spend anywhere near as much on either front. Netflix is set to revive the Fox comedy "Arrested Development" and adapt BBC drama "House of Cards," starring Kevin Spacey. These are huge commitments that have spawned smaller original efforts like Hulu's own original unscripted series featuring Morgan Spurlock. With more growth could come grander programming ambitions on par with what Netflix is developing. Studios that had difficulty selling anything that wasn't typical aftermarket fare like hourlong procedurals found that Netflix was willing to fork over high-six-figure sums for highly serialized dramas like "Mad Men," effectively creating a new market for syndie distribs. But Hulu should stay competitive here, having made its own deals for shows that would have fetched very little in traditional broadcast and cable syndication, including NBC's cult-fave laffer "Community" and Fox reality hit "Hell's Kitchen." How exactly Hulu will try to close the gap with Netflix remains to be seen after its owners, News Corp., NBCUniversal and Disney, decided to take the joint venture off the auction block and run it for the foreseeable future. Regardless of how it plays out, the subscription revenue derived from Hulu Plus will be central to their plans. Amazon's own SVOD spinoff could be even more challenging to Netflix because it has the deep pockets to nab the kind of content that will differentiate the Amazon Prime offering from the rest of the pack. Jeff Bezos' company has already stepped up to make big catalog deals approaching the scale of Netflix pacts with CBS and 20th Century Fox TV. It's possible that Netflix hasn't even seen all of its SVOD competition yet. Verizon may enter the space in conjunction with Redbox, which has been sitting on the sidelines without a digital strategy for long because it has the clout to take its time. The emergence of SVOD has eclipsed market entrants that paved the way in digital distribution by offering a la carte digital rental options, including Apple's iTunes. It's the king of a rather small kingdom given data showing the volume of transactions in so-called iVOD category is dwarfed by that of SVOD, but there's no shortage of market entrants that could make trouble especially if they go the SVOD route, including Walmart's Vudu and Dish Network's Blockbuster. Facebook poked a toe in the iVOD water this year with some one-off movie offerings from studios including Warner Bros. Although Facebook has talked a lot about having more of a presence in the content world, there's only a vague sense of what its plans actually are. Microsoft's Xbox Live was the first to try a third digital-distribution model for video that everyone from Verizon to Sony has been reported considering: the virtual MSO model, which bundles a bunch of linear channels akin to how a cable operator does, but with much fewer channels at a much lower price point. All the while, Xbox stays in the iVOD biz via its Zune marketplace. Like Microsoft, Google is a company to watch because it's not relying on any one digital-content business model. Google has poured at least $100 million into an original-content strategy that has reconfigured YouTube into a more channel-centric outlet while beefing up the premium-content supply to its rental offerings. The company is even contemplating a virtual-MSO strategy via a broadband network being built for the test market of Kansas City. What Google needs most is content to support its platforms, whether its own nascent Google TV service or the myriad handhelds powered by its Android software. Apple is thinking similarly, leaving perhaps the biggest question market hovering over the entire playing field: Will there be an Apple-branded TV set introduced to the market next year? Such a product would be an instant gamechanger if it comes to fruition. Last but not least, don't underestimate the incumbents all these digital players are trying to marginalize: the MSOs. Whether a cable operator like Comcast or satcasters DirecTV and Dish, they have the resources and relationships with programmers to innovate with real impact if they're willing to experiment with offerings that might go head-to-head with their legacy businesses. 'The Hobbit' Trailer: 5 top Unveils
Finally, "The Hobbit" trailer has finally been revealed. Ultimately, we've been waiting 10 years -- also called since the first "Master in the Rings" film first hit theaters -- with this particular movie's trailer being released finally. Climax a prequel for the previous movies, "The Hobbit" can be a project which has been in development a lot more than its forerunners. Director Healing For Healing For Peter Jackson initially preferred to begin his adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's saga with "The Hobbit", but because of particulars they have to start with the 2nd obligations in the series. Watch the "Hobbit" trailer! We're not really worrying, but you'll find a number of things in this particular trailer that we have been waiting an excellent extended while to find out revealed. Following a jump, we list in the five most enjoyable debuts in "The Hobbit's" first official trailer. Bilbo Baggins It absolutely was no large surprise that Bilbo Baggins got his large debut in this particular trailer. We view him in photos, we view him in behind-the-moments videos, and that we have virtually been anticipating his appearance within the get-go. But that doesn't mean his introduction just like a youthful hobbit inside the teaser wasn't any less exciting. Watching the transition from Ian Holm's portrayal of Bilbo to Martin Freeman's began our "Master in the Rings" nostalgia into high-gear. It only helps that Freeman was basically born with this particular role. Consider us excited. The Dwarves The dwarves of "The Hobbit" already got a significant dramatic debut. Furthermore to all or any being introduced individually, every a person featured in a number of featurettes and stills frequently that individuals appear like everyone knows them as our parents. That didn't ensure it is any less exciting when the trailer not only individually introduced typically the most popular dwarves again, but furthermore featured them in song. It's literally about as Tolkien since it can get together, which we loved every second from this. Sting No, we're not really speaking in regards to the singer. Sting might be the sword (well, really an elven knife, but basically fit to become sword for just about any hobbit) that Bilbo finds in "The Hobbit" and finally eventually ends up passing onto Frodo in "The Master in the Rings." It's a weapon many of us are familiar with, so that it was exciting to find out Bilbo unsheathing it for apparently the first time in this particular trailer. His glee matched up up our personal because he saw the sword revealed, now we're just biding our time until we view it glow blue again. Galadriel and Gandalf Furthermore for the primary story of "The Hobbit," Jackson has incorporated a completely new side story that heavily features "Master in the Rings" figures Galadriel and Gandalf simply because they explore a rising evil in Mirkwood Forest. They're featured numerous occasions in this particular trailer, that is apparent that Jackson intentions of having their tale be described as a primary problem with the initial movie furthermore for the second. That is us absolutely, one hundred percent not worrying relevant for this accessory for Tolkien canon. Gollum Yes, we'd a stomach feeling Bilbo's first winding up in Gollum could be incorporated in this particular trailer. It's a scene we view carried out in "The Master in the Rings" movies, which is one we understood we'd see again this time around around around. That didn't stop the reveal of Gollum within the finish from the trailer from being any longer dramatic, though. We didn't have an excellent have a look at Andy Serkis reprising his role as Gollum, but it's basically one of the high points from the new film for people. And, from that which you did see, he and Freeman look freaking awesome together. What were your chosen moments from "The Hobbit" trailer? Reveal inside the comments section below or on Twitter!

Universal PicturesBridesmaids Earlier today, the Screen Stars Guild introduced the nominees for that 18th annual SAG Honours (that will occur in Hollywood on Sunday, The month of january 29), and there have been numerous significant surprises and snubs. Here's my best make an effort to seem sensible from it all.our editor recommendsSAG Honours Nominations: The Entire ListSAG Honours: The Nominees Significant FACTOIDS The film which had the very best showing was The Assistance, which received four nominations (best ensemble, Viola Davis for the best actress, and both Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer for the best supporting actress). The Artist was close behind with three nods (best ensemble, Jean Dujardin for the best actor, and Berenice Bejo for the best supporting actress). After which there is an array of films that nabbed two: Albert Nobbs (Glenn Close for the best actress and Jesse McTeer for the best supporting actress) Bridesmaids (best ensemble and Melissa McCarthy for the best supporting actress) The Descendants (best ensemble and George Clooney for the best actor) J. Edgar (Leonardo DiCaprio for the best actor and Armie Hammer for the best supporting actor) Moneyball (Kaira Pitt for the best actor and Jonah Hill for the best supporting actor) and My Week with Marilyn (Michelle Williams for the best actress and Kenneth Branagh for the best supporting actor). PHOTOS: SAG Honours Nominees Significant INCLUSIONS The very best ensemble jerk for that comedy Bridesmaids and finest supporting actress jerk because of its principal scene-stealer Melissa McCarthy are huge -- the cherry around the cake which was a amazing week for the film and also the performance: the film and McCarthy received individuals same nominations, correspondingly, in the BFCA McCarthy was named best supporting actress through the Boston Society of Film Experts and NY Film Experts Online the film was named best ensemble through the NY Film Experts On the internet and the film gained a just right the AFI's listing of the very best 10 films of the season. Consequently, McCarthy has become an odds-on favorite to attain a best supporting actress Oscar jerk, and, odd as it might seem, the film needs to be supervised very carefully like a potential surprise best picture Oscar nominee. Jonah Hill, who once committed to the kind of comedy that McCarthy has been recognized, gained a best supporting actor jerk that old-fashioned way: inside a drama. The 28-year-old Moneyball star surprised everybody -- aside from the number of us who caught his operate in Cyrus (2010) -- by a lot more than holding their own opposite Kaira Pitt within the baseball drama like a straightlaced amounts-puncher. That's right, folks, it's searching progressively likely that you simply're going to need to become accustomed to the odd-sounding phrase: "Oscar nominee Jonah Hill." COMPLETE LIST: 2012 SAG Honours TV and Film Nominees I believed that Leonardo DiCaprio, among the couple of celebrities who's also an stars' actor, stiil had an excellent possibility of snagging a best actor jerk for his stirring performance because the title character within the much-maligned biopic J. Edgar (he did), however i never required seriously the chance that SAG may also nominate his co-star Armie Hammer -- not because Hammer isn't perfectly good within the film, but while he had much less to complete inside it he's lesser-referred to as an actress also it hasn't felt like there is enough passion available for that film to guide to 2 acting nominations. However when a handsome and charming youthful actor works the SAG circuit -- especially at tests then Q&Regarding which his co-star draws the public -- it may clearly really make a difference. 51-year-old veteran Tilda Swinton (We have to Discuss Kevin) outperform lots of more youthful and greater-profile stars to snag the 5th place within the best actress category alongside lengthy-presumed safe bets Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Viola Davis (The Assistance), Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn), and Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs). Swinton had only one time before been nominated by SAG for a person performance (instead of being part of an accepted ensemble), which year she continued to win the very best supporting actress Oscar. In line with the nominations introduced yesterday through the BFCA now by SAG, it now seems that Jessica Chastain is going to be going to the Academy awards (despite getting five performances in films for five different galleries being pressed against one another within the same category), which she'll do so with respect to the commercial hit The Assistance (as opposed to the Tree of Existence, by which many experts preferred her work). With best supporting actor nods yesterday in the BFCA now from SAG, Nick Nolte (Warrior) is constantly on the mount among the all-time great acting comebacks. Among the top stars and heartthrobs from the eighties and the nineteen nineties, Nolte gained two Oscar nominations within the latter decade before experiencing serious personal and legal issues round the turn from the century, after which many people assumed he was cleaned up. Between this honours recognition along with a prominent role around the approaching Cinemax show Luck, he appears to become showing them wrong. In ways, the very best actor jerk for that Mexican actor Demian Bichir (A Much Better Existence) was probably the most heartening to determine, since it shows the SAG nom-com voters really do their research and look for the littlest of honours hopefuls, by which gems of performances such as these can often be found. Bichir, 48, continues to be working being an actor in relative obscurity since he was 14-years-old, and well-deserved recognition such as this could literally change his career. Significant SNUBS The only greatest surprise, in my experience, was the exclusion of Albert Brooks (Drive) in the best supporting actor category, particularly in light to the fact that he's been obtaining best supporting actor wins -- nevermind nominations -- right and left in recent days. (Among individuals which have honored him: the NY Film Experts Circle, NY Film Experts Online, Boston Society of Film Experts, and Bay Area Film Experts Circle.) I'm afraid the only real possible explanation will be able to imagine is a which i noted at the start of the growing season: Brooks isn't probably the most beloved guy on the planet. He appears to possess mellowed right into a great guy at this time of his existence, but for several years within the prime of his career he was noted for being difficult to utilize. That shouldn't matter on the day like today, whenever a performance, not really a person, is allegedly being recognized... but voters are humans, too. The 2nd greatest surprise, in my experience, was the exclusion of Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) in the best supporting actress category, particularly in light to the fact that SAG clearly loved the film by which she gave her breakthrough performance. The only real possible explanations will be able to think about it for this specific snub are deficiencies in knowledge of the actress (it was, in the end, her giant screen debut, also it came included in a huge ensemble) and/or splitting votes together with her costar Judy Greer (who has developed in the business considerably longer and labored that has a lot more stars, a number of whom might have been inclined to election on her rather than Woodley). Numerous presumptive best picture Oscar challengers were completely snubbed today, that could prove problematic on their behalf in the future, since merely a small number of the 83 best picture Oscar those who win have won that title without also transporting a minumum of one acting nomination. (The final to do this was Slumdog Uniform 3 years ago.) Probably the most conspicuously snubbed: War Equine, which never really was a go at individual acting nods, but tend to have become a needed boost having a best ensemble jerk Hugo, that Ben Kingsley was a go in a best supporting actor jerk Mess Tailor Soldier Spy, that Gary Oldman was a go in a jerk The Lady using the Dragon Tattoo, that Rooney Mara was a go in a best actress jerk Shame, that Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan was a go at and finest supporting actress nods, correspondingly Martha Marcy May Marlene, that Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes was a go at best actress and finest supporting actor nods, correspondingly and Very Noisy and extremely Close, that Max von Sydow and Sandra Bullock was a go at best supporting actor and finest supporting actress nods, correspondingly (but that was probably hurt by its very late screening date). Madrid, 1987
A Buenavida Producciones production. (Worldwide sales: 6 Sales, Madrid.) Produced by Jessica Huppert Berman. Directed, put together by David Trueba. With: Jose Sacristan, Maria Valverde, Ramon Fontsere."The passing of your energy might be the only real theme," declares hard-bitten protag of "Madrid, 1987," and taking into consideration the film consists almost entirely from the monologue in the grubby bathroom, the year progresses remarkably quickly. A intelligent, ultra-wordy stab at catching the zeitgeist at any time of alternation in the united states, David Trueba's two-hander nonetheless feels as if a practical-from social and styles which has less than accomplished the whole leap from page to film. Result teems with ideas that may make most sense towards the the spanish language language arthouse auds, suggesting that offshore interest beyond fests will probably be limited. Per title, the pic is positioned at any time once the country had been within reach of the political class who saw using the transition to democracy carrying out a dying of Franco. Chain-smoking, whiskey-consuming lecher Miguel (Jose Sacristan), deeply deeply deeply in love with the appear that belongs to them voice, is certainly a maturing political journo who's made the decision to satisfy university student Angela (Maria Valverde) to supply advice. Nevertheless it quickly becomes apparent what he'd like, and so they mind for your apartment of Miguel's artist friend Luis (Ramon Fontsere). No sooner gets the unfailingly pretentious Miguel expressed the wish that he'd enjoy getting "smelled" Velazquez's painting "Las Meninas" than he's daubing Angela's back with blue fresh fresh paint. Disgusted, Angela heads for the bathroom with Miguel in pursuit, and also the pointed out need to spend two several hours alone along with her comes all of a sudden true when the door jams shut, trapping them. It's in this particular absurd situation, naked inside the summer season warmth (at any time that predates cell phones in the united states), they spend the comfort in the film. The locked-bathroom setting signifies that this is often a study of 2 decades which will never contact one another unless of course obviously absolutely expected to, while giving Trueba the chance, metaphorically additionally to physically, to strip them bare. Happens is positioned for just about any energy struggle that will leave the old guy feeling weaker than he's familiar with. At 74, Sacristan provides among his finest performances which is singlehandedly responsible for making the pic watchable. The frankly tiresome Miguel is, to take advantage from the The the spanish language language phrase, pleased to possess met themselves: Experience on youth, age, existence, dying and art pour from him almost continuously, shipped to be able to declare that Miguel is calculating from stuff he's written, in a mix of wit -- "the photograph by having an ID card will there be to assist help remind us what idiots we'reInch -- and cliche. Instantly identifiable just like a type inside the country, and tragically unaware of his growing irrelevance, Miguel reps a vintage-soldier generation that were living using the turbulent publish-Franco many improperly feels there's nothing the greater youthful generation can train him. Mostly quiet, Valverde is a great foil, delivering a number of reactions since the torrent of Miguel's words washes over her, and nicely limning the struggle from the kid trying to free herself within the authority Miguel thinks he's by right, playing within the pic's metaphor of Spain's find it hard to free itself within the turmoil of the 20th-century past. The crew uses mostly female talent. Leonor Rodriguez's camera does exactly what it can to produce the cramped conditions in the eco-friendly-hued bathroom interesting. Really the only music is certainly a stylish piece from singer-songwriter Irene Temblay inside the final scene.Camera (color), Leonor Rodriguez editor, Marta Velasco music, Irene Temblay production designer, costume designer, Laura Renau appear (Dolby Digital), Alvaro Silva, Eduardo G. Hermetically Sealed
A Katselas Theater Company presentation of a play in one act by Kathryn Graf. Directed by Joel Polis.Tessie May - Gigi Bermingham
Conor May - Nicholas Podany
Dale Jr. - Julia Prud'homme
Dale Sr. - Brendan Patrick Connor
Jimmy May - Wolfie TrauschThesp Gigi Bermingham's laserlike concentration on the mechanics of fashioning lemon squares is reason enough to take in Kathryn Graf's family drama "Hermetically Sealed," enjoying a long run at the Skylight. Though the writing and helming are otherwise light on subtlety, Bermingham's troubled pastry chef is a textbook example of that always essential but often violated Acting 101 principle: Do, rather than be. It'd be easy for an actress to wallow in the distress of Tessie May, an abandoned spouse cooped up with louche older son Jimmy (Wolfie Trausch), a fancier of joyrides with older gay men, and foul-mouthed, videogame-addicted son Conor (Nicholas Podany). Helmer Joel Polis establishes an ominous mood within which each of Tessie's elaborate dawn preparations for the day's order, dessert for 150, takes on intimations of dread. But Graf is so intent on protecting the family's slowly revealed central secret as to make everything else spot-on and overly explicit. Tessie has to blast opera to show her desire to escape; Conor must be given his own aria, an unconvincing highfalutin rant, so we don't miss the fact he's precocious. A more heinous example: In advance, Conor warns us that Tessie's employers are "two fat, wacky assholes." Are we allowed to decide for ourselves? Nope, they instantly live up to billing. The catering queen (Julia Prud'homme), her mouth full, spouts Christian new-agey self-help blather (religious belief being today's favored shortcut for authorial ridicule), while husband Dale Sr. (Brendan Patrick Connor) is just a leering lout. Graf will not rise to the next division of playwrighting until she's willing to find multiple levels of humanity in all her creations, however vile. Polis compounds the problem by indulging his players (except for Bermingham, and Trausch briefly) in extremes of behavior and volume from the get-go. Particularly hard-hit is Podany, a gifted, expressive young man who needs to learn we want to see characters fight off breakdowns, not give in to them. Anything hermetically sealed loses its potency as soon as the lid is popped, and Podany pops his in scene one in a torrent of online verbal violence. Its recurrence undercuts the tender, understated moments he eventually pulls off. Yet back in the kitchen, Tessie/Gigi just goes about her business, slicing up mangoes to demonstrate how she herself is sliced up. She knows how to reveal heartbreak while revealing the best way to create circular tarts (put flour on the cutter; dip and shake). When her hermetically sealed psyche breaks open, it's with classical Greek intensity, but it wouldn't happen without all those specific culinary touches. As with Jeff McLaughlin's meticulously photorealistic set, the angel is in the details.Sets and lighting, Jeff McLaughlin; sound, Chris Moscatiello. Opened Oct. 22, 2011. Reviewed Nov. 19. John Lasseter Talks Pixar's Mind Movie
'It's unlike anything youve ever seen'Back in August, at the Disney D23 event, Pixar stalwart and Monsters, Inc/Up director Pete Docter announced that he and producer Jonas Rivera were hard at work on a new film for the studio, due in 2014 and currently called The Untitled Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind. Now John Lasseter has revealed a tiny extra snippet about the plot.Talking on the Charlie Rose show, Lasseter broached the subject of Pixar's upcoming slate, which includes mythological adventure Brave, prequel Monsters University, The Untitled Dinosaur Movie (being directed by Docter's Up collaborator, Bob Peterson) and the Mind pic. While he didn't give away much (this is, after all, John Lasseter, a man who guards his company's future film secrets the same way JJ Abrams does), he did say a little bit, including mentioning the setting. Yes, the new film "takes place inside of a girl's mind and it is about her emotions as characters, and that is unlike anything you've ever seen."And that was it for the sharing, but it certainly raises some interesting points. Setting the plot in a girl's mind means Pixar seems committed to answering critics who have long complained about the lack of female lead characters, and the concept of emotions and ideas being portrayed as living, breathing beings in a 'toon movie is certainly fascinating. We can't wait to see what this all means, but sadly, we'll have to be patient, as the first trailer likely won't hit for at least a year...The interview, by the way, touches on everything from Pixar's history to its culture, and you can check it out here.
Special deals, football pace publish-holiday week
Holiday special deals including CBS The Victorias Secret Fashion Show acquired the other day. Telepic 'Good Luck Charlie' will be a champion for Disney Funnel.Lots of TV's finest hits rested inside the week following Thanksgiving, a frame centered by football and specs starring models, country crooners together with a particular red-colored-colored-nosed reindeer. CBS didn't air a number of its top dramas or comedies, as well as the only ABC originals -- its "Not such a long time ago"-introduced Sunday dramas -- saw below-average perfs, possibly due to inadequacies in series circulation earlier inside the week. Fox, which broadcast its top shows and introduced new comedy "Personally, I Can't Stand My Teenage Daughter" to decent amounts, won a couple of days in many key demos. The web appeared to become substantially elevated having a Sunday Nfl overrun, exceeding Thirty Dollars million audiences beginning off primetime your evening. According to Nielsen, Fox averaged a 3. rating/8 participate grownups 18-49, well before NBC (2.3/6), CBS (2.2/6) and ABC (1.8/5), with Univision (1.4/4) and ESPN (1.3/4) in the tight fight for fifth Univision elevated to 3rd in grownups 18-34 (1.5/5), before CBS and ABC. Fox also introduced in grownups 25-54 (3.5/8 to 2.9/7 for CBS), while CBS edged out Fox in general audiences (8.9 million to eight.6 000 0000). For Fox, Sunday's animated vets "The Simpsons" (4./10 in 18-49, 9.00m) and "Family Guy" (3.6/8, 7.14m) were above average due to the football overrun. Earlier inside the frame, "The X Factor" shined with Wednesday's performance show (3.7/10, 11.04m), and Tuesday originals "Glee" (3.2/8, 7.90m), and "New Girl" looked good (3.6/9, 7.59m). Following "X Factor," the premiere of "Personally, I Can't Stand My Teenage Daughter" saw good-enough amounts (2.8/7, 6.80m), however it may be hard to hold only at that level when the show's primary competitors are in originals. Round the drama side, "Bones" introduced its Thursday hour (2.8/7, 8.91m), nevertheless the Monday tandem of "Terra Nova" (2.2/6, 7.19m) and "House" (2.6/6, 7.41m) were underwhelming. CBS shipped the week's top two 18-49 scores for nonsports programs with some Tuesday special deals: "Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" (4.6/12, 10.39m), up 35% versus. a year ago, and "Rudolph the Red-colored-colored-Nosed Reindeer" (4./11, 12.64m). Even though its top dramas and comedies all were preempted or broadcast repeats, CBS still exercised well with repeats like "2 Broke Women" (3.3/8, 7.70m) and "The Big Bang Theory" (3./9, 10.48m). And reality vets "Survivor" (3.1/9, 11.05m) and "The Astounding Race" (2.7/6, 9.58m) saved chugging along. NBC was introduced of course by "Sunday Evening Football": The Detroit Lions-Saints game was the week's No. 1 primetime program (7.4/18 in 18-49, 18.90m). Internet also accomplished good results from some repeats and preemptions, as "Finest Loser" (2.4/6, 7.12m), "MotherhoodInch (2.1/5, 5.76m) and "Law and Order: SVU" (2.2/6, 9.90m) were near season levels. Not going to a substantial uptick was the net's Thursday comedy block, introduced by "WorkInch (2.9/8, 5.71m) and "Whitney" (1.9/5, 3.93m). ABC saw rookie hotshot "Not such a long time ago" (3.2/7, 9.66m) decline towards the least expensive score so far, despite the fact that it is constantly deliver hugely-period gains. The web also did Confident with special deals like Thursday's "CMA Country Christmas" (2.1/6, 9.03m), up nicely versus. a year ago, and perennials like "Shrek the Halls" (2.6/7, 7.70m) and "Santa Claus is Going to Town" (2.2/6, 7.23m). ESPN introduced the cable nets thanks mostly towards the "Monday Evening Football" contest involving the NY Leaders and New Orleans (5.6/15, 14.42m). Disney Channel's original movie "All The Best Charlie: It's Christmas," using the net's hit sitcom, averaged 6.88 million audiences being most likely probably the most-seen live-action cable movie of 2011. Charter Communications Looks For 2012 Opportunity To Experience Offense
Charter Communications is constantly hope that technology will enable it to becomecable’s little engine that could. Boss Michael Lovell states that his company’s arrangement to promote TiVo DVRs to clients — that's just getting started in Feet. Worth — is “a pretty dynamic game changer.” According to him the item “allows us to see offense” against satellite companies and telcos introduced by AT&T’s U-verse that have specific no. 4 cable operator which emerged from personal personal bankruptcy protection couple of years ago. “We anticipate marketing the merchandise strongly.” The business also provides large plans for on-screen navigation it recently began to supply its broadband clients aggregated video records for Hulu, Netflix and Amazon . com . com. Youthful Adult: Film Review
A tart, abrasive character study from the seriously messed up author who pens a twisted new episode to her existence, the pungent Youthful Adult feels as if an instalment using what by rights needs to be a long film or novel. As if deliberately striving to produce something less warm and friendly than his genial first three features, Jason Reitman reunites here along with his Juno cohort Diablo Cody around the smartly observed, well socialized but narrowly produced story of a deluded author of teenybopper books who plots to restore her secondary school boyfriend, who's now a happily married father.our editor recommendsCharlize Theron on Playing a 'Bitch' in 'Young Adult' (Video)Paramount's Jason Reitman-Directed 'Young Adult' Start Searching (Exclusive)VIDEO: Youthful Adult: Trailer Deftly carried out every respect, this Vital release, which oddly side walked the fall festival circuit, is closer in sense of an indie-style film as opposed to a significant studio production, which causes it to be a curious selection for a Christmas launch. Okay commercial results look likely. PHOTOS: THR Actress Roundtable With Charlize Theron, Michelle Williams Entirely remaining from the type of trademark fancy dialogue that made her title on Juno, Cody most distinguishes herself here by creating two unusual figures from the kind rarely observed in the forefront in the mainstream film. The foremost is Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron), a wonderful lady who certainly are 40 before extended, still hasn't become her existence together and may be looked at, by most reckonings, a condescending, first-class bitch. Living alone in the untidy high-rise apartment in downtown Ontario, Mavis remains ghostwriting records with an adolescent novel series for any very long time, despite the fact that this looks being winding lower. She's a divorcee who is able to get males when sherrrd like but, when the excuse arrives revisit her small Minnesota hometown, she concocts an agenda to reclaim the glory that was hers just like a teen by tempting away her secondary school boyfriend, Buddy (Patrick Wilson), no matter that the first time she sees him on her behalf account visit, he's got a breast milk pump in hands. PHOTOS: Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt round the Gotham Honours Red-colored-colored Carpet Dolled up or else, Mavis remains a knockout, perceived by residents just like a glamorous success who hasn't changed whatsoever since school days. She loathes the banality in the town and part of the early-stage humor originates from the fitted-to-kill Mavis requiring to frequent chicken-and-ribs-type sports bar restaurants, the most effective the town must offer. Despite her relative worldliness, Mavis remains an psychologically immature adolescent, with teenage points of interest, prejudices and dreams. The second character of note, a lot more unusual, is Matt Freehauf (Patton Oswalt), a classic secondary school classmate to whom she states, upon going through him in the bar, "You're the hate crime guy!" A caustic sad sack getting a nick on his shoulder how big Mavis' sense of brilliance, Matt relates how he was cajolled and ultimately beaten up and left for dead by lots of jocks since they thought he was gay. The irony, according to him, is always that he isn't gay but, ever since then, he hasn't been ideal for anything else, because he's permanently crippled and bent overweight, physically and psychologically. PHOTOS: Behind the curtain in the THR Actress Roundtable Here, then, will be the polar opposites in the secondary school experience, the babe while using finest self-esteem as well as the shlub while using least expensive, all of whom remain psychologically stunted, basically where they were 2 decades before. Such figures -- the snooty mean full as well as the razzed geek -- are staples of teenybopper pictures but they're rarely seen as senior citizens still moving the identical baggage. These two had nothing to keep in individuals days however can certainly talk since they get one another and are ready to be frank he calls her on her behalf account b.s. and he or she accuses him of employing his disabilities every excuses because of not doing anything. Their moments together will be the film's best, with Theron and Oswalt, who've different tempi and temps as artists, parrying and thrusting with great expertise. The means by which Mavis responds with Buddy, somebody should dub her shameless Mavis. Meeting his nice wife Jesse (Elisabeth Reaser), Mavis continues about how precisely she and Buddy used to be together alone with him, she recalls how excellent accomplishments were in the past and processes as though there's pointless why they shouldn't get where they left off. Buddy just type of smiles irritatingly through everything being nice, which only leaves the entrance wider open for Mavis to keep pushing her progressively misguided agenda. PHOTOS: THR Director Roundtable With Jason Reitman, Alexander Payne Irritating a formerly bad situation is her alcoholism. "Do you want to get loaded or something like that like this?Inch Mavis demands of Matt after among her "dates" with Buddy, that's componen for your course along with her. There've unquestionably been many occasions formerly when males are actually thrilled to listen to her say something such as this there's without doubt she's lively, provocative company when she's were built with a couple of products. But Mavis doesn't know when you stop, so that it's only after she completely embarrasses herself in the petulant, self-pitying public rant, they has something such as an epiphany that will help point the means by which on her behalf to move forward. In this area-by-scene basis, Youthful Adult entirely engages having its smart trades between figures that are well fitted with rough edges and raw nerves. Mavis and Matt undergo some key existence changes too, delivering some dramatic movement. Nevertheless the plot, such since it is, features a very short arc and almost exclusively includes planning Mavis's way of tempting Buddy back you will discover no subplots or side activities, just the surprising hooking up that occurs between Mavis and Matt. It seems sensible an effect of vibrant character sketches rather than of full-bodied drama with depth and complexity, of two figures, particularly, who could easily warrant a lot more extensive treatment, so really especially attracted is it. In the supporting figures, really the only particularly interesting the very first is Matt's sister Sandra (a great Collette Wolfe), an regular lady who, dealing with her brother, does not have existence, has always researched to Mavis and inadvertently makes some comments that affect the path of things. Jumping to the deep finish by getting an essentially unlikeable character who's nonetheless compelling and frequently thrilling to check out, Theron is terrific. She makes Mavis' arrogance and certainty of her allure not only convincing but enjoyable. When her behavior becomes pathetic and pitiable, however, there's no feeling of deserved comeuppance, just relief that going an excessive amount of may ultimately provoke her to tug herself together. Oswalt, the stand-up comic who was simply excellent in Large Fan couple of years back, works extremely well again here, submitting sufficient of Matt's information on hurt under his bracingly jaundiced gab. Neither the script nor Wilson provides much knowledge of how Buddy really feels (or felt) about Mavis, a girl whose literary exercises and existence encounters have blurred in manners most most likely helpful to neither. Youthful Adult, that's been directed with acute insight by Reitman with elevated target the means by which individuals behave after they're alone, is great to date because it is going, nevertheless it feels a great deal a lot more like a summary the full canvas, a weekend jaunt instead of a genuine journey. Bloomberg: No Time Like Present For Jobs Heirs To Sell Apple, Disney Stock
Laurene Powell Jobs might never find a better time to sell her late husband Steve’s$6.78 billion stake in Apple andWalt Disney Co., according to wealth management experts who talked to Bloomberg News. Jobs’ heirs could sell all their shares now and avoid $867 million in capital gains taxes. If Steve Jobs left everything to his wife, the family wouldn’t be liable for the 35% estate tax until she dies or gives money to others.I cant see any reason not to sell all of it, saidKacy Gott ofwealth-management firm Aspiriant. Another reason advisers said Jobs’heirs should sell some stock to reduce the estates risks is thatthe capital gains tax is set to rise to 20% percent in 2013 from 15%. High-income Americans will also be subject to a 3.8% levy on unearned gains. From an investment standpoint, all the advisers who spoke to Bloomberg said Jobs’ holdings should be more diversified — even though Disney and particularly Apple stock have performed better than Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway by comparison over corresponding time frames. Jobs owned 138 million Disney shares, valued Monday at $4.74 billion, and 5.55 million Apple shares worth $2.05 billion, according to filings. Jobs also moved his holdings into trusts as his health worsened. Trusts let people distribute wealth over time and avoid probate fees. If Jobs had sold all his Disney and Apple shares the day before he died, he would have registered a gain of about $5.78 billion and a tax bill of $867 million. Thats based on his investment of $55 million in Pixar Studios, now part of Disney, and Apple shares granted in March 2003. Disney stock would be more complicated to sell on the open market because the Jobs stakerepresents almost 12 times the average number of Disney shares traded each day. The Apple holdings amount to less than a third of the 17.6 million shares traded on a daily basis, making an open market sale much simpler. Jobs died on Oct. 5 at age 56 from complications of pancreatic cancer. His will hasnt been made public. Jobs is survived by his wife and four children, Lisa, Eve, Erin and Reed. Three people who know Powell Jobs, who has a masters degree in business administration from Stanford University, dont think she is interested in taking her husbands seats on the Apple or Disney boards. Her intentions may not matter if a bank is managing the investments because, as one adviser pointed out, “A bank would be duty-bound to diversify the holdings.

Mexico moves up digital switchover to 2015
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico is moving up its terrestrial analog-to-digital switchover date, from 2021 to 2015, after a vote Tuesday in Mexico's Supreme Court failed to derail the initiative. President Felipe Calderon first issued the decree to move the switchover date during his annual national address, akin to the U.S. State of the Union address, on Sept. 2, 2010, but the idea met a wall of political and legal obstacles. The president and other advocates are promoting the move as a way to level the over-the-air playing field dominated by Mexico's top two broadcasters, Televisa and Azteca, who control 95% of the market share. The decree also stated that digital converter boxes would be imported and sold at a "fair" price to aid the switchover. The response was largely negative among lawmakers. The Senate declared it unconstitutional, kicking the ruling up to the high court, citing that only the Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel) could make such a decision. However, there have been widespread accusations that Cofetel is heavily influenced by Televisa and Azteca, who face real competition stemming from certain aspects of the new technology, particularly digital multiplexing, which could vastly expand the number of over-the-air channels. On Monday, the high court categorized the decree as an executive rule that requires eight of 12 judges to vote against it for the court to invalidate it. But only seven judges voted against it on Tuesday. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Father's Day
A Troma Team release of a Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz presentation of a Troma Team and Astron-6 production. (International sales: Troma Team, NY.) Produced by Kaufman, Herz. Executive producers, Matt Manjourides, Adam Brooks. Directed, written by Astron-6.With: Adam Brooks, Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Amy Groening, Mackenzie Murdock, Meredith Sweeney, Brent Neale, Garrett Hnatiuk, Kevin Anderson, Billy Sadoo, Falcon Van Der Baek, Zsuzsi.Winnipeg collective Astron-6's first feature, "Father's Day," is a gleefully tasteless quasi-grindhouse nasty that's funnier than most of the many such parodic cheesefests that have been created since, well, "Grindhouse." Though the result is inevitably hit-and-miss, its attention to retro cliches and stylistic details, as well as a pretty good laughs-to-groaners ratio, will delight jaded genre fans -- several of whom voted it best feature at Toronto After Dark last month. More horror fests and midnight slots are sure to follow; Troma plans a January theatrical launch, though principal exposure is likely to skew toward download and DVD. Resurfacing of the fabled, elusive Father's Day Killer -- a longtime serial rapist/murderer/cannibal consumer of dads -- unites several whose families have been victimized, notably strong silent type Ahab (Adam Brooks), street hustler Twink (Conor Sweeney) and priest Father John (Matthew Kennedy). The B-grade action cliches pile up as the three set out to hunt down the monster, whose current fat-slob form turns out to be just the latest human disguise for a demon whom the protags literally pursue to Hell. En route, we get deliberate continuity errors, imperiled male members, godawful or incongruous soundtrack music, a hallucination sequence and a million filmic in-jokes. Pic has its roots in a fake trailer (Astron-6 has made numerous shorts in a similar vein) which Troma subsequently commissioned as a $10,000 feature. Resulting homage to '70s drive-in fare and '80s direct-to-vid trash comes complete with a station break during which we get another amusing fake trailer (for bottom-rung "Star Wars" ripoff "Star Raiders"). The script's amusing arbitrariness and the leads' comic chops -- all actors are members of the highly multitasking Astron-6 quintet (yes, there's just five) -- more than compensate for jokes that eschew a sometimes inspired absurdism for routine scatological humor. Fast pace, colorful location choices and design contributions belie the film's tiny budget while reproducing the aesthetic of early VCR-era rental gems that seldom cost a whole lot more.Camera (color, HD), Adam Brooks; editor, Brooks; music, Jeremy Gillespie, Paul Joyce, Brian Wiacek; production designer/costume designer, Steven Kostanski; art directors, Kostanski, Gillespie; set decorators, Kostanski, Brooks, Gillespie; costume designer, Kostanski, Brooks; sound, Gillespie; makeup effects, Kostanski, Brooks; digital effects, Gillespie, Kostanski, Ben Pickles, Brooks, Alex McLellan, Jon'Nathon Stebbe; casting, Brooks. Sleep Tight (Mientras duermes)
A Filmax relieve a Filmax Entertainment presentation from the Castelao Producciones production while using participation of TVE, Canal Plus, TVC. (Worldwide sales: Filmax, Barcelona.) Produced by Julio Fernandez. Executive producers, Carlos Fernandez, Alberto Marini. Directed by Jaume Balaguero. Script, Alberto Marini, based on his novel. With: Luis Tosar, Marta Etura, Alberto San Juan, Iris Almeida, Petra Martinez, Carlos Lasarte, Margarita Roset.A dark thriller a great unhappy Barcelona apartment-block concierge set on destroying the happiness of others, "Sleep Tight" is built to give auds sleep deprived nights, and mostly works. Getting a shudder-inducing perf from Luis Tosar, pic reps a worthy addition for the eminently marketable canon of recent The the spanish language language horror, as helmer Jaume Balaguero capably handles an even more classical approach to genre in comparison to mock-doc technique used for your "Rec" gorefests he co-helmed. Good opening-weekend B.O. in the united states needs to be then solid sales offshore. Immediately, it's apparent that Cesar's (Tosar) reliance on happy-go-lucky Clara (Marta Etura) will finish badly. Clara's perpetual radiance irritates the beetle-browed Cesar, who sights themselves incompetent at such pleasure. Cesar has clearly not successful charm school. The tactics he utilizes to upset Clara include delivering disturbing anonymous letters, entering her apartment throughout the evening to inject her face care cream getting a liquid that will leave her with welts, and lounging under her bed mattress while she sleeps before quietly giving her chloroform and sliding in in mattress. But preteen neighbor Ursula (Iris Almeida) could be Cesar's techniques, and starts blackmailing him. Through the daytime, Cesar musters all the sweetness and light-weight they can, fostering in the dogs possessed by senior citizens resident Veronica (Petra Martinez). But after he releases of a kilo of roaches into Clara's apartment, she leaves the structure, which was not his intention. After she returns with boyfriend Marcos (Alberto San Juan), an amount more annoyed Cesar ups the stakes. Tosar, getting shipped most likely probably the most memorably over-the-top psycho perf in recent The the spanish language language cinema in Daniel Monzon's "Cell 211," here shows they can embody a whole different register of sociopath. Fawning, mumbling and humble throughout your day, Cesar throughout the evening becomes as quick, dark and morally oblivious since the roaches he's revealed Tosar's intensely compelling perf may also be more disquieting in comparison to fast-moving plotline are equipped for. Though it may be overstating products towards the script produces sympathy for Cesar, it's careful at the begining of moments showing his cruelty as pathetically childish. Pic's focus can be a scene that stylishly straddles farce and horror as Cesar is locked in Clara's apartment with Clara and Marcos. It's evidence of ale scribe Alberto Marini (adapting their very own novel) that audiences will uncover themselves, hopefully irritatingly, rooting for your villain. Indeed, Tosar's perf is sufficiently gripping to paper over some credibility defects, mostly attracting the incredible all the best Cesar seems to own when carrying out his obviously completely laid plans. Etura (furthermore a "Cell 211" vet) does decent work, but is hampered because Clara is passive and basically uninteresting. The clumsiest moments have Cesar confessing to his make the hospital mother (Margarita Roset) -- unnecessary given pic utilizes voice-over. Like the two "Rec" films released up to now, "Sleep Tight" is positioned mostly in the single apartment block, and Pablo Rossi's lensing turns its old, creaking elevators and shadowy spaces and crannies into an correctly Medieval backdrop that juxtaposes nicely while using apparent pastels and streaming sunlight of Clara's apartment. Extensive usage of closeups produces some creepily textured images and intensifies the general sense of claustrophobia. Patti Page's 1955 hit "Keep Me inside your mindInch may be used inside a couple of sequences, somewhat unsubtly illustrating the truism that love can be a hazardously obsessive game.Camera (color, widescreen), Pablo Rosso editor, Guillermo p la Cal music, Lucas Vidal production designer, Javier Alvarino costume designer, Marian Coromina appear (Dolby Digital), Oriol Tarrago, Jordi Rossinyol. For Hollywood creatives, existence mimics art
Large business provides a resource of criminals in movies and tv because the medium's infancy, outlined by Frank Capra films and adaptations of Charles Dickens -- and gaining popularity in modern occasions because of the villainous void produced through the Cold War's finish. The Occupy Wall Street movement, however, has introduced restored focus on the look of the items Leader Obama has known to as "body fat-cat bankers," whose relationship with Hollywood's creative community is amplified by their uncomfortable resemblance to a different distrusted elite -- namely, body fat-cat media moguls, presiding over ever-bigger conglomerates.Corporate overlords have lengthy embodied ruthlessness in popular culture, a historic trend the Wall Street Journal lately investigated. Despite Hollywood's perceived liberal bent, the piece noted that such movies are motivated less by politics than screenwriters and company directors "indicating their very own perennial bitterness of bottom-line focused studio heads, who frequently aim to dilute a film's message for mass-market appeal."Nonetheless, the net income-above-all-else plotline has risen from basically evicting the happy citizens of "It is a Wonderful Life's" Bedford Falls to dazzling sci-fi extremes. In a nutshell, in movies and TV, professionals aren't above engineering a killing to create one.Because the Berlin Wall fell, business's offenses include complicity in nuclear annihilation (CBS' "Jericho"), tampering with existence and dying (the most recent "Torchwood," subtitled "Miracle Day") and possibly the pinnacle of bigscreen evil, the media magnate as Mission Impossible villain ("Tomorrow Never Dies"). Tellingly, in remaking "The Manchurian Candidate," the string-tugging heavies moved from communists to companies. The amount of malevolence indicates that antipathy toward greedy multinational monoliths has had on the much deeper hue, with Hollywood's awareness of economic colored and informed through the media's changing structure. Creative talent interacts daily with major galleries that are presently cogs in massive up and down integrated businesses -- and involved in fractious discussions with individuals organizations, outlined through the 2007-08 authors strike. The actual tension or painful reminiscences were reflected within the statement released by recently chosen Authors Guild of America, West leader Christopher Keyser, indicating solidarity using the Occupy protestors."The companies and those who gambled with this future, who designed a killing on that wager after which got bailed out by us, have returned with robust profits and unconscionable salaries," Keyser mentioned. "Nobody has compensated a cost for your however the American worker."From the distance, the WGA didn't have overriding reason to go in the fray. But as Keyser noted, there is a practical element, too: Galleries use their formidable assets to lobby Washington and advance their interests "most abundant in costly megaphone the all-too-flexible rules permit. We won't be quiet in reaction.InchObviously, Hollywood talent identifies with downtrodden labor, even when their very own elite people command the type of stratospheric salaries that vault them in to the much-talked about top 1% of wage earners.Throughout the strike, many authors evoked the political language from the sixties to define the struggle, prior to the present Occupy campaign. Indeed, activist Jesse Jackson overtly used civil privileges era rhetoric to explain the scribes' lot.The authority to be part of the industry's growth signifies "a part of a bigger struggle in the usa today," Jackson told a entertaining crowd 4 years ago -- evaluating writers' plight to Martin Luther King Junior. championing Memphis garbage employees and Cesar Chavez's efforts with respect to farm employees, the most popular theme being, "Too couple of people wish to control an excessive amount of.InchOf course, wearing down third functions of crime dramas hardly qualifies as hard physical work. But feelings of powerlessness -- or at best feeling overmatched -- in dealings with modern media behemoths have coalesced right into a strong feeling of injustice.Individuals producers mixed up in early the nineteen nineties also harbor another memory: the way a vibrant business class lost the regulating fight to preserve the financial interest and distribution rules, paving the way in which for that network-studio consolidation that adopted along with a dramatic decrease in the amount of independent TV providers.Under an era later, the development community looks much different, inside a world going through upheaval on separate but somewhat parallel digital and political tracks. As a result, the so-known as "body fat-felines" better resign themselves to being vilified, in reality and Hollywood's almost always far better-searching version. Because within the eyes of screenwriters, company directors and stars, their interplay using the industry's consolidated oligopoly continues to be one short on happy being. Dancing Season 13 Finds Its Frontrunners
First Published: October 3, 2011 10:45 PM EDT Credit: ABC Caption Ricki Lake, Derek Hough, J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff on Dancing with the Stars, October 3, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Its official Ricki Lake and Derek Hough are the team to beat on Dancing with the Stars. For the second week in a row, the actress and her professional ballroom partner took the top spot on the leaderboard in the ABC dance competition. The theme of the night was Most Memorable Year, and Ricki took inspiration from 2010, the year she got a divorce, lost everything in a Malibu house fire and found love again with her now-fiance Christian Evans. Her rumba with Derek was a mixture of push/pull Derek would draw her in and Ricki in a flowing pink outfit would turn away before the ended the number in a horizontal embrace. The emotion of the moves touched the judges who were impressed with her skill and awarded the celeb and her partner the top score of the night 27 out of 30. Ricki and Derek finished the closest to a perfect score, but the dance that tugged at the heartstrings of the audience was the rumba from former All My Children star and army veteran J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff. Performed to Tim McGraws If Youre Reading This, a military-themed tune, J.R. glided across the dance floor, taking inspiration from the year he was injured in combat. Although new to ballroom, J.R. looked semi-professional alongside Karina, showing off graceful lines full of rhythm and beauty. The rumba touched the ballroom, leaving the audience on its feet, clapping for so long, their cheers nearly eclipsed comments from the judges. Heroes, I believe, are made, judge Carrie Ann Inaba said, choking back tears, as the pair earned 26/30. Theyre normal people, theyre ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Tonight you did something extraordinary. You touched us all and I could feel the weight with which you danced That was one of the most profound, honest dances Ive ever seen on this stage. The pair tied with Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani for second (they too earned 26/30 for a rumba). Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas landed in a four-way tie for fourth, after performing their cha cha, which was cheered on by her former fiance, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who gave the pair a standing ovation. The other teams that each earned 24 points were Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke (for a foxtrot), Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkoskiy (for their cha cha) and David Arquette and Kym Johnson (for their rumba). Once again landing at the bottom of the leaderboard, however, was Chaz Bono and his partner, Lacey Schwimmer. The activist danced a rumba to a Sonny Bono song Laugh At Me, from 1965, which Chaz said in his intro package, had a special significance. It felt like a theme song for me almost, because its about if you have a problem with me, thats your problem, not mine, Chaz said. As the number began, Chaz blew a kiss to the heavens, presumably for his late father, and then took to the floor with Lacey, scoring 18/30 for their number. It wasnt your best performance, Carrie Ann said. You looked really distracted. But judge Len Goodman had a different opinion. That was your best dance Ive seen you do, he said. Cher wasnt there to cheer her son on, but she vowed to show up next week if Chaz makes it through. Hope Chaz hangs on till next week so I can come sit in the Audience & Watch, she Tweeted during the broadcast. Dancing with the Stars returns on Tuesday with its results show at 8/7 C on ABC. The leaderboard scores were as follows: Ricki Lake and Derek Hough performed a rumba and earned 27/30 JR. Martinez and Karina Smirnoffs rumba earned 26/30 Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani performed a rumba and earned 26/30 Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke took their foxtrot to a score of 24/30 Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas shook their samba to 24/30 Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy performed a cha cha and earned 24/30 David Arquette and Kym Johnson performed a rumba for a score of 24/30 Carson Kressley and Anna Treunskaya tangod their way to 23/30 Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus took their waltz to 21/30 Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer took on the rumba and earned 18/30 Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. TRAILER: Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project Looks Pretty Much Like Harvey Weinstein Project
As a longtime Harveyologist, few prospects on the movie beat seem more appealing to me than an unauthorized documentary about Harvey Weinstein. I mean, Harvey Weinstein! Just saying the name conjures both quivering fanboy chills and the faint, foggy effluvia of sweat and Diet Coke wafting over a freshly vacuumed and Febrezed red carpet. Harvey. Weinstein. Stirring, no? So why, why does the first trailer for Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project leave me so cold? Maybe because it’s a succession of platitudes from the likes of Martin Scorsese, John Irving and Peter Bart followed by platitudes from the filmmaker about how foolhardy a Weinstein doc is? Huh? Filmmaker Barry Avrich got an audience with Scorsese but oh, the folly of it all? This doesn’t even look like fragments from a real doc as much as a test coat of new gloss for the Weinstein legend, as though Harvey dreamed the whole thing up as some reinforcement of his own pedigree and utter unknowability. Not to allege a conspiracy or anything. I’m just saying: Harvey! Focus! W.E. needs your full attention! I’m a Harvey obsessive, and honestly, this just makes me want to switch to Scott Rudin. Nice Statue of Liberty, though. VERDICT: Pass. [via Cinema Blend]

He released several hrs of recent programming, along with the Emmy telecast under his watch, Fox's entertainment leader squashed inside a triathlon -- his second this season. Despite a mind cold, the veteran TV executive is beaming following the Zooey Deschanel comedy New Girl opened for an impressive 10.3 million audiences along with a 4.8 rating within the 18-to-49 demo (it held a lot of that audience because of its second episode, compelling Fox to drag the trigger around the season's first full-season pick-up). Reilly, 49, has designed Fox for 4 years after stints at NBC, Forex and Kaira Gray Television. With the help of gutsy choices The X Factor and Terra Nova this year, with such staples as Glee and Family Guy, Fox is poised to position No. 1 among individuals more youthful audiences to have an eighth straight season. The married father of three boys and enthusiastic environmentalist (he's active using the Character Conservancy) sitting lower using the Hollywood Reporter to go over subjects including Fox's year-round technique for summer time and whether he's second-speculating themself overTerra Nova. PHOTOS: Fox's New Fall Season Shows The Hollywood Reporter: What exactly are your goals with this development season? Kevin Reilly: Live-action comedies most likely top their email list. Since I Have returned to Fox, the network has type of lost its pulse around the comedy side. It's debatable just how much brand association you've having a network, but in the past, there's been greater brand connection to Fox: "Oh, that's a Fox unscripted show," or, "that's a Fox drama." Fox comedy have been obvious at some point, from Married ... With Children towards the Bernie Mac Show to Malcolm in the centre. It type of lost its way, and today I finally seem like we've got the makings of having that built again. We're likely to try four comedies in March [prone to include Christian Slater's Breaking In], also it's something you want to see much more of around the schedule the coming year. Another priority is building the whole year. PHOTOS: Fall TV Preview 2011: The Coming back Shows THR: You've been speaking about year-round arranging for a while. Reilly: Yes, and i believe we now have the chance with X Element in the autumn to finally get it done. Despite the fact that we program the summer time with top-ranked unscripted shows, lots of our schedule adopts repeats, and repeats have virtually no value on network TV any longer. As we finish track of the type of season we believe we will have, we actually want to start stretching into what basically may be like year-round originals. We now have less hrs than other systems, and among the high-class issues that I'm fighting at this time may be the general sentiment of a few of the providers: "Oh, Fox doesn't need anything." I've been carrying this out a reasonably very long time, and that i've never been in a network in which you're so great you don't need anything. Whatever great news you've, you've always got two bits of not so good news pending, therefore we're likely to use that extra shelf space from the summer time to push that. PHOTOS: 'Terra Nova' Never-Before-Seen Shots From Aussie Set THR: What genres are you going to turn to participate in the summer time? Reilly: The precise complete opposite of exactly what the prevailing knowledge continues to be. There's this consider the summer time, through the systems particularly, it's time for light and cheap, as though individuals hrs are in some way less important. Cable, where we at Forex type of blazed the trail for which cable does, does quite contrary: Celebrate a lot of noise, puts in most of their marketing efforts and causes it to be important, and lots of people appear to wish to look at individuals scripted shows within the summer time. Therefore we're likely to that philosophy now. THR: Financially, would the present broadcast model support that? Reilly: There's lots of money there [from marketers]. It's how a business was built, that is that many shows don't earn on a P&L basis just on the first run, so by playing it multiple occasions you start to go into the black. Which means you program for that sweeps period after which essentially recoup and repeat all summer time - that's the business model which makes probably the most sense in writing. But go and check out the final batch of springs. Overall, the greatest hits on tv established season lows, otherwise series lows, early in the year. There's daylight savings some time and with batches of repeats, people just lose tabs on what's on and what's off. THR: Would you anticipate experimentation with various programming methods -- whether straight-to-series orders or worldwide co-productions -- mainly in the summer time? Reilly: I seem like the general media landscape is actually entering focus. The either-or factor of, well, "Digital business would still just erode our business design and frankly, make television appear just like a factor of history.Inch I don't determine if you observed, but Facebook is making bulletins getting related to use of traditional media content. What exactly's really become obvious is it's no either/or proposition, it's a feedback loop between your two, there's many, a lot of things which i think indicate an positive future. People still love shows, they would like to discuss them, take part in them and go much deeper. With nevertheless, the character of methods individuals are watching this stuff has transformed even though we'd love everyone to become there day-and-date, that's only a trend we are not likely to have the ability to reverse. As all this is happening, I don't believe the model is damaged or dead, as numerous everyone was recommending nonetheless, it's rapidly changing, and when we are really not altering our thinking and taking advantage of the energy from the social character of television by putting something in people's hands, using our schedule assets introducing things after which maybe they are available on later, programming at different occasions of the season, in my experience that's just being attentive to in which the landscape is today. And when you've got a network -- knock on wood as numerous occasions when i can-- that's not dealing with lots of water, you can start to actually test out individuals things. THR: Would you begin to see the Netflix-type services as friend or foe? Reilly: It's both. That's the dance we're in. The stuff that are supplying challenging to the system are also potentially the salvation in our business -- and their own too. They'd all enjoy having all the product and revenue and set us bankrupt, but I believe they are fully aware when they put us bankrupt, they will be directly behind us. PHOTOS: Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated Shows THR: Simon Cowell told THR when X Factor didn't attract 20 million audiences, it might be a "disappointment." Reilly: God bless him -- that's our Simon. I don't realize that we'd place it in quite individuals same terms. But like he states constantly: Nobody is out to win the bronze medal. May be the show able to do 20 million? It sure is. [The show first showed Sept. 21 with 12.5 million audiences.] I love the vibe from it, and also the idol judges' panel feels right. So far as anticipation generally this season, among the concerns we now have is the fact that we are able to win but still be perceived as being failing. THR: I'd imagine Terra Nova falls into that category? Reilly: Yes. You hear, "It's probably the most costly show within the history around the globe!Inch What's promising this season is the fact that we're not every-in on anyone show. THR: When is it necessary to come to a decision in regards to a second season of Terra Nova? Reilly: Prior to the first of the season, in the latest. We couldn't hold back until the spring and find out how anything else plays out otherwise, we'd never have the ability to deliver the year after. THR COVER STORY: 'Terra Nova': Inside the building of Probably the most Ambitious, Challenging and Costly Shows on television THR: Are you going to order more shows like Terra Nova which go right to series with only 13-episode seasons, like on cable? Reilly: I don't love that model, to tell the truth along with you. Aircraft pilots are helpful. You simply learn things throughout an airplane pilot -- the bit of casting that simply wasn't right or reasons for the storytelling character. A number of what we should battled with on Terra Nova were natural growing pains you'd undergo on any pilot, however, you're attempting to change wheels when you're going 60 miles per hour, which's hard. I don't be sorry for Terra Nova because It was the only real viable method of doing the show, and when we'd a scenario like this to complete again, we'd. THR: Is Charlie Sheen's Anger Management something you'd consider purchasing? Reilly: I don't think I'll discuss that. VIDEO: Behind the curtain of THR's 'Terra Nova' Photoshoot THR: Are you more active in the note-giving process on Glee this year, because of the critique of season two? Reilly: A maximum of before. I've got a lengthy history with Ryan [Murphy, who labored with Reilly on Forex's Puppy nip/Tuck], and that we're in great hands there. I believe, frankly, a number of [the backlash] was inevitable. When you're burning that hot on anything, eventually there's the other part from it. They've acknowledged a few of the problems that have there been last season, plus they were real. There have been several things they attempted last season, most of which labored fantastically, others that felt like some a stalemate or perhaps a dropped ball. After I be concerned in regards to a show happens when people say, "I'm fed up with these figures," or, "the associations are boring." But what we should've heard consistently is: "I really like the core figures. Are we able to just return to them?" That's that which you're likely to check this out season. PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 3: To School Pictures THR: Will it concern you that Murphy and Kaira Falchuk are splitting their time between Glee and Forex's American Horror Story? Reilly: They've setup two separate systems, plus they're running it great. It's not conventional also it's not really a quiet process, however i works with Ryan and the team for that relaxation of my career and gladly get it done -- even around the days where he really wants to kill me and I wish to kill him. THR: News Corp. COO Chase Carey made head lines lately when he stated the organization would think about a Simpsons network. What's the most recent there? Reilly: We're visiting a crossroads where you want to keep your Simpsons going, and that we're in discussions at this time, but we've been looking at a large library of episodes [which are locked into lengthy-term distribution deals]. We're getting conversations with [executive producer] Jim Brooks trying to puzzle out exactly what the next chapter appears like. I certainly don't would like it to be on my small watch where we must make that change.
