'Ghost' to haunt Broadway
"Ghost the Musical," which debuted on the West End, will head to Broadway in March.Producers are betting that "Ghost" has a chance, with the tuner version of the 1990 pic skedding a Broadway bow that begins perfs in March. Musical, which opened on the West End July 19, seemed a likely bet for a Gotham import, given the property's high profile from the Oscar-winning screen version. Some London critics had reservations about the book and the score, but most enjoyed the slick staging (complete with phantasmal illusions) and many deemed the show a crowd-pleaser. "Ghost the Musical" has a book by Bruce Joel Rubin, who also penned the screenplay for the film, and music by former Eurythmic Dave Stewart and contempo music producer Glen Ballard (Alanis Morisette's "Jagged Little Pill"). All three creatives collaborated on the lyrics. Matthew Warchus ("God of Carnage") helms. Brit production stars Richard Fleeshman as the murdered man who returns as a ghost to warn his lover, played by Caissie Levy, of impending danger. Sharon D. Clarke garnered notably strong reviews in the wacky-psychic role that earned Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar. Comprised mostly of original tunes, the legit version of "Ghost" also incorporates Righteous Brothers song "Unchained Melody," featured in the movie's famous pottery scene between the pic's topliners, Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. The Main Stem incarnation of "Ghost" is produced by Colin Ingram Prods. Ltd. and David Garfinkle with Adam Silberman, Land Line Prods., Donovan Mannato, Michael Edwards and Carole Winter in association with Paramount Pictures and ATG/Robert G. Bartner. "Ghost" begins preview in March ahead of an April opening at a Nederlander theater, with exact dates and venue still to be nailed down. Contact Gordon Cox at gordon.cox@variety.com

Last Screening (Derniere seance)
An Epicentre Films release of a Les Films du Worso, Dragon 8, Mikros Image, Arane Prods. production, with the participation of Canal Plus, Cinecinema, and the support of the Region of Burgundy and the Film Commission of Burgundy. (International sales: Les Films du Losange, Paris.) Produced by Sylvie Pialat. Executive producer, Benoit Quainon. Directed by Laurent Achard. Screenplay, Achard, Frederique Moreau. With: Pascal Cervo, Charlotte van Kemmel, Karole Rocher, Austin Morel, Brigitte Sy, Mireille Roussel, Corinne Lamborot, Noel Simsolo, Francine Lorin-Blasquez, Nicolas Pignon. It's telling that noted French film critic, helmer and part-time thesp Noel Simsolo has a small role in "Last Screening," because helmer Laurent Achard's third feature plays like a private joke best shared among movie buffs. Ostensibly a psychological thriller about a cinema projectionist-cum-serial-killer who's more than a few reels short of a full feature, pic self-satisfyingly riffs on "Psycho" and "Peeping Tom," among many others, but is ultimately little more than an accomplished but empty formalist exercise, devoid of the genuine feeling that distinguished Achard's previous, "Demented." Further fest play looks likely, as well as a niche domestic release. Creepy loner Sylvain (Achard regular Pascal Cervo) lives in the basement of a small Parisian repertory house, where he does nearly every job from selling the tickets and projecting the film to cleaning the seats afterward, although lucky for him, it's not the sort of place that sells popcorn. In fact, the joint shows only one movie every day, Jean Renoir's "French Cancan" (1954), to a handful of loyal customers, such as Monsieur Paul (Simsolo) and pretty aspiring thesp Manon (Charlotte van Kemmel), who's sweet on Sylvain. The cinema's owner (Nicolas Pignon) plans to sell the place, which will leave Sylvain not only unemployed and homeless, but with nowhere to display his secret gallery of movie-star headshots, to which he affixes human ears, earrings included, harvested from women he stabs to death during his after-hours walks around the city. Victims include a majorette (Corinne Lamborot), a market-stall saleswoman (Mireille Roussel) and a kind-hearted taxi driver (Brigitte Sy), among others. Heavy-handed flashbacks reveal Sylvain's psychosis stems from a traumatic upbringing by a loopy mother (Karole Rocher, "Polisse"), who was herself obsessed with films and would hit Sylvain as a child (played by Austin Morel) if he forgot lines of dialogue she forced him to memorize, seemingly for auditions. Maman Dearest's actions have apparently forged the monster we meet, although the pic isn't any more interested in psychology than it is in realism, given how implausibly long Sylvain's murder spree goes on without consequence. As he demonstrated with "Demented," helmer/co-writer Achard has a fondness for finding insanity wriggling under quotidian, seemingly harmless rocks, and is effective at milking long, slow shots for suspense. There's no doubt about the high quality of the technique on display here, from the wink-wink key lighting to the symphonic use of source sound. However, the material is so inherently silly that the style with which it's executed ends up looking meretricious and facile. With a fierce, maniacal stare and an ability to look unsettling when doing nothing more than standing still, Cervo once again proves an impressive presence who nearly manages to save the movie. Other members of the ensemble also turn in good, standard perfs, with those playing Sylvain's victims particularly meriting praise for producing singularly harrowing screams of pain at the appropriate moments.Camera (color), Sabine Lancelin; editor, Jean-Christophe Hym; production designers, Frederic Lapierre, Frederique Lapierre; costume designer, Benedicte Levraut; sound (Dolby Digital), Xavier Griette; supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer, Mikael Barre; assistant director, Pierre Senelas; casting, Francois Guignard. The Indiana State Fair re-opened Monday morning -- less than 48 hours after a stage collapsed before a Sugarland concert, killing 5 people.our editor recommendsSugarland Concert Stage Collapse: Musicians React to the TragedySugarland Concert Stage Collapse: An Eyewitness Report "We come today with hearts that are broken but also hearts that are full," Governor Mitch Daniels told the silent crowd, according to the New York times. "There was a hero every 10 feet on Saturday night," Daniels added. "I cannot tell you how proud I am to be the employee of six and a half million people like that." More than 48 people were sent to the hospital after a storm gusted 60 to 70 mph winds. The fairgrounds were closed on Sunday. As of Monday, the collapsed stage -- "an enormous tangle of metal and flapping tarps," according to the Times -- was roped off with yellow police tape. The somber memorial service was held on a smaller stage. State officials are investigating the collapse: if the stage had structural problems, if fair officials moved fast enough to evacuate in light of weather warnings. The severe thunderstorm was issued three hours before the scheduled concert. Wrote Sugerland's Jennifer Nettles on her website Sunday: "I am so moved. Moved by the grief of those families who lost loved ones. Moved by the pain of those who were injured and the fear of their families. Moved by the great heroism as I watched so many brave Indianapolis fans actually run toward the stage to try and help lift and rescue those injured. Moved by the quickness and organization of the emergency workers who set up the triage and tended to the injured." "There are no words to process a moment of this magnitude and gravity. There are only prayers for peace in the hearts of the bereft, and prayers of thanksgiving for those who were spared or safe," she continued. "A piece of our heart is left in that grandstand. May God provide peace and healing to the people of Indianapolis." Related Topics Sugarland

TCA: Paul Lee & Marc Cherry On Ending 'Desperate Housewives' Next Season
EXCLUSIVE: ABC Will End 'Desperate Housewives' In May 2012 After 8th Season This morning ABC officially announced what Deadline readers already knew: that this coming season will be the last for veteran Desperate Housewives, which, along with Lost, turned ABC's fortunes around in the fall of 2004. "It is an iconic show; we are so proud of it," ABC entertainment president Paul Lee said. "I just wanted to make sure that the show that put the network on the map had its victory lap and had a chance to build a great final arc." Lee was then joined by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry. "I think the only thing harder than creating a ht show is to know when to end it," he said. "It's something that has weighed on my mind for some time. I'm well aware of people who have overstayed their welcome, and I just didn't want that to happen to us. I wanted to go out while the network still thought it was a viable series and while it still did well in the ratings; I wanted to go out in the classier way possible." According to the network's press release, the upcoming "Season Eight of Desperate Housewives will roll out in a way that is accessible even to viewers who may have lapsed in their viewing, and be all the richer and more rewarding to the series loyal fans." Cherry elaborated that the "mystery of whats going on in the final season harkens back to the first season," to "the roots of the Mary Alice mystery," which kicked off the series seven years ago. "It feels right that that would be the storyline that would take us out." As a result, I hear that Brenda Strong, who narrates the series as Mary Alice but has only made a handful of appearances on the show, is expected to get a lot of screen time this season. Asked whether Nicollette Sheridan's character Edie Britt will make a return, Cherry, who is being sued by the actress over her termination from the show, made a pause before responding, "I don't know how I would do that, but I have an idea for the last episode where I want to pay homage to everyone who has been on the show." Cherry described the reaction of the cast members to the news of the show's end as "bittersweet" with "a touch of shock." He ruled out the possibility of a Desperate Housewives spinoff, though he admitted that, in an emotional phone conversation with star Eva Longoria over the past two days, he told her, "I'm just going to put you in a van and have you solve mysteries." "The truth is, I thought about that a lot," Cherry said about the possibility of spinning off Housewives. "I have had a lot of success doing that mix of a soap, a drama and mystery with Desperate Housewives after writing half-hour sitcoms for 15 years. Now Hallelujah is such a different animal. I'm trying to go places I havent gone before. That's why I won't do a spinoff and the things you see from me will be very different." As for Hallelujah, which Cherry is now redeveloping, "I did a pilot, half of it was terrific, half of it wasnt," he said. He also gave credit to former ABC topper Steve McPherson, who "saved my life, saved my career" by picking up Desperate Housewives script after everyone else in town had passed on it.
